What is a Sandpaper Roll and How Can I Use it?
If you are planning a building or redecorating project then one of the items that you will likely have to hand is sandpaper, or a sandpaper roll. Sandpaper roll can serve a number of different uses in DIY and professional remodelling and painting alike, and so it is important that you understand what it is and how you can make use of it to the best effect.
What is a Sandpaper Roll?
Sandpaper is a type of paper that is widely used in DIY and professional redecorating and remodelling. More specifically, it is actually a form of coated abrasive material and serves as an abrasive roll. This allows sandpaper to be used in a variety of different formats, the most common of which is in DIY and painting applications.
The first known example of sandpaper roll being used—or an early variant of what we now consider to be sandpaper—dates back to 13th century China. The early Chinese were highly creative, and so it comes as no surprise that they were one of the first to come up with this technique. In the past, it was made by attaching rough solid matter such as sand, shells, or seeds to parchment to form the abrasive nature of sandpaper, although finer grits are also used for a polishing effect.
Sandpaper roll comes in a variety of different abrasiveness levels. Some sandpaper rolls are made with very fine particulate matter, meaning that instead of being highly abrasive, the sandpaper can be used for gentle polishing. Other sandpaper is made with incredibly course materials; these sandpaper rolls are used to file down or grind off unwanted material, such as for removing paint from a wall or slimming down a board of wood to fit a specific size.
What are Sandpaper Rolls Made From?
A modern sandpaper roll is made from a variety of different materials. Most commonly, the backing for the sandpaper roll will be made from either cloth or rubber, although PET film is sometimes used too.
Modern sandpaper rolls are usually finished with either garnet (in woodworking, often), emery, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, chromium (III) oxide, diamond, or ceramic aluminum oxide. This depends largely on the application of the sandpaper; diamond coated sandpaper is used widely for finishing and polishing hard metals, for example, as diamond is the hardest metal on earth. Similarly, emery is often used to abrade or polish metalwork. In the past, glass and flint were sometimes used as abrasive materials for sandpaper roll too, however, this is not seen often anymore; other abrasive materials are more highly favored.
The aforementioned abrasive materials are usually attached with a form of adhesive. The most common types of adhesives used are resins, due to their waterproof nature, although hide glue is sometimes used as well.
Applications of a Sandpaper Roll
A sandpaper roll can be used in a number of different ways. This makes it an important tool for people to have when doing their own DIY project. But how can it be used in a painting application?
Preparing Wood
If you are going to be painting wood, then using a sandpaper roll to first smooth the wood to remove splinters and grains is an important step. This will also help to give the finishing product or feature item a smooth finish too, which is important for plenty of different reasons. As such, if you are thinking of painting wood, you may want to first grind it down to a smooth and workable surface.
Remove Grout Grains
When it comes to tiling your property, one of the biggest frustrations can be grout stains on the tiles. Luckily, this is easily fixed with a sandpaper roll which will allow you to scratch off the excess grouting so that it doesn’t ruin the aesthetic value of your tiled floor. In fact, a little elbow grease with some sandpaper can do the job far better than chemical products, and usually will take less time as well.
Add Texture
Though it is not necessarily a common application for sandpaper rolls, some artists and DIY enthusiasts are actually starting to incorporate sandpaper rolls into their designs! Indeed, by painting over the top of sandpaper, you can quickly and affordably add extra texture to your walls and feature pieces!
